How old is the computer that you're trying to install Ubuntu on?

With a slow connection, an older computer and updating all packages during installation it could takes hours to do an install.

How much memory do you have? How did you set up the install media (which program, and options like "toram" if used). Did you turn off the updates until the install is done (not needed at install time, and may be done later)?
