I have an old HP DV2845se laptop - dual core, 2ghz, 4gig of memory and an NVIDIA GeForce 7150M/630M video card. Apparently the required Nvidia 304.x driver is no longer supported and has been dropped in recent Ubuntu releases.
What would be a good older Ubuntu for this machine, or should I be looking toward a more lightweight distro?

Then you can try 16.04 LTS, do not worry - it will be supported until 2021.
