TL;DR: dbus
is setting an environment variable, which makes less
search capability unusable
Long story short: I've Ubuntu 18.04 in Virtual Box, and when I try to search any text open with less
via / key and press Enter, it inserts ESC text instead of actually searching the text.
I've figured out that there were couple less
-specific environment variables exported in the environment:
$ env | grep LESS
LESSCLOSE=/usr/bin/lesspipe %s %s
LESSOPEN=| /usr/bin/lesspipe %s
With environment ignored via env -i less /etc/passwd
for example, the command accepts Enter` key just fine, and searching works although without highlighting the match.
I've tried investigating where this environment variable comes from and apparently it comes from dbus
$ grep 'LESS' .xsession-errors
dbus-update-activation-environment: setting LESSOPEN=| /usr/bin/lesspipe %s
dbus-update-activation-environment: setting LESSCLOSE=/usr/bin/lesspipe %s %s
dbus-update-activation-environment: setting LESSOPEN=| /usr/bin/lesspipe %s
dbus-update-activation-environment: setting LESSCLOSE=/usr/bin/lesspipe %s %s
Desktop environment in use: Cinnamon 3.6.7 (and there is also LXQT 0.12.0 that was in use prior to installing Cinnamon, although the issue appeared only recently presumably after Cinnamon installation)
According to this answer the issue may be related to the fact that keypad Enter key sends a different keycode, and using --no-keypad
option with less helps. Problem is that I don't use keypad - the laptop on which I am working has only one Enter key.
