Our ability to netboot xenial broke a couple of weeks ago when we started seeing the following message from the installer:

Failed to load installer component.

Loading libc6-udeb failed for unknown reasons. Aborting.

This was addressed and fixed by following a chain of bug reports ending with this one:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1820419

However, the fix is only found in xenial-updates at:

linux 2019-02-21 13:49 6.9M .
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/xenial-updates/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/linux

But is not found at the base xenial:

20-Apr-2016 15:53 7M

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/xenial/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/linux

This means that people attempting to use netboot for 16.04 have to somehow know that there is a netboot update in xenial-updates.

Apologies for this naive question: shouldn't an installer fix impacting boot loaders make it back to the base xenial repo?

If not, I wonder what is the best way to construct a boot command-line that is a bit more future proof and won't break if an installer fix appears for future releases.

Thanks in advance,

Doug
