El apellido Popham tiene su origen en las antiguas tribus anglosajonas de Gran Bretaña. Fue adoptado por la familia cuando vivió en Popham, Hants, actualmente Hampshire. Otra variante de este apellido es Poppam.


La etimología de la primera parte del apellido es incierta. Los especialistas medievales creen que deriva de la vieja palabra inglesa popp, que significa guijarro. La segunda parte, ham, significa granja o recinto.


Existe registro del apellido desde 903 en censos reales con fines impositivos y como Popeham en 1086 en el Domesday Book.


Como emigrantes a las colonias británicas de Norteamérica figuran Edward y George Popham en Maine en 1607.


Richard Popham se instaló en Nueva York en 1820.

    Sir Home Riggs Popham (Gibraltar, 12 de octubre de 1762 – Cheltenham, 20 de septiembre de 1820) Almirante británico de ascendencia irlandesa, investigador, estratega, comerciante, diplomático y político, perfeccionó el sistema de numérico telegráfico de señales por banderas que usó la Armada Real Británica en el siglo XIX (1803), prestó servicios durante la Guerra de Independencia Norteamericana, las Guerras Revolucionarias Francesas y las Guerras Napoleónicas. Fue caballero comendador de la Orden del Baño(KCB)(1815), caballero de la Orden de Malta (1799) y miembro de la Fellow of the Royal Society(FRS).
