When I first started using Ubuntu, I installed the majority of the applications using apt-get.

I'm now a little more experienced, and happy to compile applications from source.

I would now like to compile some existing applications from source to get newer versions than are available as apt packages.

I have searched extensively on the web, but can't find any insights into how I would stop apt from tracking an application, and allow me to compile from source.

Is the only way to do it to uninstall using apt, then reinstall using make install?
