Calar Alto es el monte más alto de la sierra de Los Filabres, con 2168 m de altura, situado en la provincia de Almería, España. El vértice geodésico situado en la cima en las coordenadas 37°13′25″N 2°32′46″O / 37.223611111111, -2.5461111111111 dentro del término municipal de Gérgal[1]​[2]​ se encuentra a una altitud de 2167,865 msnm.[1]​

Acceso


El acceso a la cima más habitual se realiza desde la localidad de Abla por la nacional 324, tomando un desvío a la izquierda en el kilómetro 214 que dirige a una carretera de 31 km de longitud hasta llegar al observatorio.[1]​

Este monte alberga el observatorio de Calar Alto, un observatorio astronómico hispano-alemán,[1]​ que se beneficia de dos aspectos del clima de la región: el ambiente seco reduce las restricciones que el vapor de agua atmosférico se suma a las características de transmisión a través de la atmósfera, y el bajo número de noches nubladas bien añade a la eficiencia de las observaciones durante el año.
