El Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) es la asociación más antigua y numerosa de los amigos y apasionados del Alpinismo y de la montaña en Italia.

Historia


La idea de fundar un club que reuniese a los alpinistas italianos se encontraba en la mente de Quintino Sella, y el 12 de agosto de 1863, con ocasión de una ascensión del Monviso, inspirándose en análogas asociaciones existentes en otros países europeos como Austria y Suiza. La fundación oficial del club se efectuó el 23 de octubre de 1863, en el Castello del Valentino en Turín.


El primer presidente electo del CAI fue el barón Ferdinando Perone de San Martino.
El CAI tuvo su primera sede en Turín. En seguida se fueron abriendo nuevas sedes en otras ciudades italianas. Debido a la primera guerra mundial el CAI absorbió la Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (en el 1920) y la Società Alpina delle Giulie.



Actividades


Son más de 700 refugios, vivac y otras estructuras alpinas gestionadas por el CAI.

Actualmente son numerosas las sesiones, escuelas y cursos de alpinismo que organiza favoreciendo el conocimiento de la montaña y las medidas de seguridad que hay que observar.
