La Región Sur de La Guajira, departamento colombiano, también recibe el nombre de Provincia de Padilla. Esta provincia está conformada por los municipios de La Jagua del Pilar, Urumita, Villanueva, El Molino, San Juan del Cesar, Distracción, Fonseca, Barrancas y Hatonuevo, En orden de sur a norte. Esta provincia no tiene una capital definida, ya que posee 2 ciudades que son complementarias, las cuales son San Juan del Cesar y Fonseca, dado que la última posee Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje(SENA), una extensión de la Universidad de La Guajira, mayor comercio en el sur y posee las principales sedes gubernamentales; mientras que la primera posee un Hospital Regional, los principales entes de salud, la mayor cantidad de bancos en esta provincia, es la despensa agrícola del departamento, posee en su jurisdicción un peaje, una terminal de transportes, tiene la mayor población y superficie de todos los 9 municipios y además posee una carretera que lo comunica directamente con la Capital cesarence.


Pero además esta provincia está subdividida en pequeñas subprovincias que poseen un núcleo urbano central las cuales son: Villanueva Grande y Gran Fonseca.



Villanueva Grande


Está ubicada en el extremo sur del departamento, formada por los municipios de La Jagua del Pilar, Urumita, Villanueva y El Molino, teniendo como capital a Villanueva, estos poseen un pasado común, ya que todos, en un tiempo pertenecieron a Villanueva; primero se independizó Urumita, luego El molino y por lo último La Jagua del Pilar.
