El búho magallánico[1]​[2]​ o tucúquere[3]​ (Bubo virginianus magellanicus) es un ave nocturna, de plumaje rayado. Vive en Sudamérica, desde Tierra del Fuego hasta el centro de Perú, incluyendo el oeste de Bolivia, Argentina y en la mayor parte del territorio de Chile. Anida en laderas de quebradas o en nidos abandonados de Peuco (Parabuteo unicinctus), donde pone de 2 a 3 huevos casi redondos. Su peso varía entre los 650 g hasta 1 kg. Se ha reproducido exitosamente en cautiverio.[cita requerida] Se alimenta de pequeños mamíferos, como roedores y conejos, reptiles e incluso peces. El nombre "tucúquere" es onomatopéyico, es decir que deriva de su vocalización.


Su característica principal son las plumas o "penachos" que tiene en la cabeza, los que asemejan orejas o cuernos.


Es una subespecie del búho cornudo (Bubo virginianus). Sobre la base de estudios genéticos y morfológicos realizados a fines del siglo XX, algunos autores lo consideraron como una especie diferente: Bubo magellanicus,[3]​[4]​[5]​ sin embargo, sectores geográficos en el norte del Perú con aves intermedias llevaron a otros investigadores a hacer marcha atrás a la elevación a especie de este taxón, hasta poder contar con mayores estudios.[6]​


En septiembre del año 2009 se creó un nuevo billete de 5000 pesos chilenos en cuyo reverso aparece un tucúquere.[7]​
