La ciudad de Moyobamba fue fundada como Santiago de los Ocho Valles de Moyobamba, el 25 de julio de 1540. El 4 de septiembre de 1906 al crearse el departamento de San Martín se le designa como capital del departamento.

Nota: En el Perú, los alcaldes son elegidos mediante voto universal y secreto desde el año 1963. Estas elecciones se interrumpieron entre 1969 y 1979. Desde el año 1999 el periodo de gobierno municipal es de cuatro años.
