La siguiente es una lista de jugadores excluidos y suspendidos por la National Basketball Association (NBA). Según el artículo 35 de la Constitución de la NBA, el comisionado de la liga tiene poder para dictar medidas disciplinarias (ya sea la suspensión o multas inferiores a 50.000 dólares) a los jugadores por incidentes extradeportivos, conductas que no se ajusten a las estandartes del juego limpio y a las leyes federales o estatales, y conductas perjudiciales para el baloncesto o la propia liga.[1] Según el Convenio de Negociación Colectiva (en inglés: Collective Bargaining Agreement o simplemente CBA) de 2005 entre la Asociación de Jugadores de la NBA (NBPA) y la NBA, cualquier parte (jugador, equipo, la NBA o la NBPA) puede apelar a un árbitro si la suspensión es mayor de doce partidos o si una multa supera los 50.000 dólares. Si se presenta una apelación, el árbitro tiene el poder para defender o rechazar las decisiones adoptadas por el comisionado.[2] Si el incidente es lo suficientemente grave, como manipulación de resultados o abuso de sustancias prohibidas, los jugadores pueden ser excluidos indefinidamente, aunque los jugadores excluidos por abuso de sustancias son readmitidos dos años después debido al acuerdo antidrogas entre la liga y la NBPA.[3]
A principios de existencia de la liga, varios jugadores fueron excluidos indefinidamente debido a su participación en escándalos de apuestas en la universidad, aunque Connie Hawkins consiguió anular su exclusión a través de demandas judiciales. Otros más fueron excluidos indefinidamente por abuso de sustancias prohibidas y por lo general nunca más volvieron a jugar en la liga, aunque algunos como Micheal Ray Richardson y Chris Andersen regresaron a la NBA tras su sanción. Entre los suspendidos, Ron Artest y Latrell Sprewell se enfrentaron al castigo más grave por altercados en la cancha; fueron suspendidos por 73 y 68 partidos, respectivamente. Gilbert Arenas fue también suspendido por más de la mitad de los partidos de temporada regular por llevar armas de fuego al pabellón y usarlas durante un altercado con un compañero en el vestuario.
