La Ley de Jante (danés: Janteloven; sueco: Jantelagen) es una ley ficticia creada por el autor danés/noruego Aksel Sandemose en su novela En flygtning krydser sit spor (Un refugiado sobre sus límites) (1933), en la que retrataba su ciudad natal a principios del siglo XX.


Aunque en realidad existen 10 normas diferentes en la ley de Jante, se habla de ella en general como si se tratara de una sola cosa. La palabra danesa loven significa 'la ley'. Las normas son las siguientes:


  1. No pienses que eres especial.

  2. No pienses que eres especial para nosotros.

  3. No pienses que eres más listo que nosotros.

  4. No te creas mejor que nosotros.

  5. No pienses que sabes más que nosotros.

  6. No pienses que vales más que nosotros.

  7. No pienses que vales para algo.

  8. No te rías de nosotros.

  9. No creas que alguien debe ocuparse de ti.

  10. No creas que puedes enseñarnos algo.

Una undécima norma fue añadida más tarde por Sandemose, bajo el marbete del "derecho penal de Jante":


11. ¿Acaso crees que no sé nada sobre ti?

Esta ley impregnó las culturas danesa, noruega, sueca y finesa, países en los que se desaprueba que una persona se considere o sea mejor (en inteligencia, fuerza, belleza, o cualquier otra cualidad o habilidad) que las demás.


A los que violan esta norma no escrita se les mira con cierta hostilidad y se considera que van en contra del deseo danés de conseguir una igualdad y justicia social entendida como una igualdad total.


Este fenómeno no es exclusivo de Escandinavia y se puede encontrar en otras partes del mundo. Algo similar ocurre en los Paises Bajos y entre los habitantes de la zona noreste de Inglaterra, especialmente en Yorkshire donde se ejemplariza con frases como «¿Quién se ha creído que es?». Esta es una de las zonas de Gran Bretaña donde los vikingos procedentes de Dinamarca establecieron asentamientos en el siglo VIII y es posible que aún permanezcan algunos puntos culturales comunes.
