I am on Kubuntu 18.04 LTS, and have installed Gnome and Ubuntu desktops. When I try to log in with the Ubuntu on Wayland option selected, it stalls for a while and reloads the login screen. The Gnome desktop just seems to choose Xorg despite my choosing the option that just says Gnome, and not gnome on Xorg, as I can see from the output of my environment variable
$ echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
x11
However I installed Weston and sway, and in both of these environments Wayland works. What do I have to do to start up the Ubuntu desktop with Wayland?
